This is a good vine that is well suited to the soils and prevailing climate of the Ticino. It is fine, round, full-bodied and fruity when obtained from very mature grapes, but has an unpleasant herbaceous character if insufficiently mature. It was introduced in the Ticino in 1907, and then was gradually recommended to replace some of the less interesting local vines. It is genetically pretty homogeneous. The available selections are good and the various experimented clones have not reduced the sensitivity of the vine to poor atmospheric conditions (fruit-dropping in early stages of growth, rot). Any excessive vigour aggravates this sensitivity and adversely affects the quality of the wine.
