Martigny - Sion through the villages
This itinerary of about 30 km takes you along the right riverbank of the Rhone plain. It follows the lesser chains buttressing the main mountains and takes you through all the well-known wine villages of the Valais. From Martigny follow the main road towards Fully for about 2 km, this road has a very heavy traffic. Immediately after the bridge over the Rhone, you join the road towards Sion which runs along a canal. Cross the latter and follow the short steep slope towards Branson. Following this road you will ride through Fully, Châtaignier and Mazembroz. Always remain at the bottom of the counterforts; if you get on a road with heavy traffic along a canal, you are not on the right way.

To get to Saillon, you can either take the straight road that follows the canal or stay at the bottom of the conterforts on a road through the vinyards and which is not tarred for about 1 km. Next to the kennel turn right and keep on its right side. Cross the fishing canal by boat and stay on its right side until you reach the first houses of Saillon. You will reach this village by following the "rue des Amandiers". On this stretch signposts by the TCS indicate mountain-bike tracks with steep slopes (VTT). In Saillon, you have the possibility to go on straight towards Leytron, or you can take a short ascent through this mediaeval village to its upper part on a road that keeps to the right of the cemetery. Returning to the road at the bottom of the village, move to Leytron. You then have the possibility to go to Riddes and further on to Sion on a road next to the highway.

Alternatively, you can take the more difficult short but very steep ascent towards Chamoson. From there you can go to St. Pierre de Clages and visit its magnificent Roman church and then ride to Sion on the main road. In the centre of the village of Vétroz you can leave the main road and take the "Rue des Vignerons", then the "Rue des Dailles" and the "Rue Centrale" and follow the counterforts of the plain on the right side of the river. At the exit of Conthey you may take the fairly easy ascent towards Vuisse-Chandolin or Mont d'Orge, and from there move on to Sion.
